Schlitzberger & Daughters Monument Company might be located in Houston, but they have strong ties to Galveston County. Bobby and Dianne Schlitzberger, both Texas City High School graduates — class of ‘67, now operate the family-owned company, which was founded by Bobby’s father in 1961. Bobby estimates that his father made around 100,000 memorials in his lifetime, and currently he and his wife are at around 150,000 memorials produced so far.
“What a great tribute — to leave something that is so permanent as a memorial, and it is so personal to the families it affects,” Bobby said.
Schlitzbergers produces some of the finest memorials and crafted stonework in the country, and in addition to personal memorials, they have also been hired to do many public works. Included among their long list of accolades is the Audrey Beck Jones memorial wall at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, a memorial commemorating the meeting of President Kennedy and General Yarbrough at Fort Bragg, numerous pieces for H. Ross Perot, including work at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy and many more. They are currently working on a tribute to President Kennedy at the General Worth Square in Fort Worth, the site where Kennedy gave an impromptu speech prior to heading to Dallas where he was assassinated.
Schlitzbergers has won many awards for their fine craftsmanship. In 2008 they took home the Eugene H. Faehnle trophy through The American Institute of Commemorative Art, which is the top monument design award in North America. Both Bobby and Dianne were recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Southern Monument Builders Association for the lifetime of dedication and work that they have done in the monument business. They recently came back from the four-state convention for the Southern State Monument Builders Association where they took home the People’s Choice Award for a 15-foot tall granite obelisk commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
