For MaryAnn Selva, art is not a job; it is her passion.
“Everyone has something that inspires passion,” she said. “For me, that’s art. It’s a way to share beauty, and it’s something I do because I enjoy the way it makes me feel, the way it brings me total peace.”
Although she was born in Montana, MaryAnn got to Texas as soon as she could. She grew up in Houston, then traveled the world, learning and developing as an artist along the way.
“I’ve been an artist my entire life, and as I’ve grown, my art has grown,” she said.
Over the years, MaryAnn has worked in many media, including stained glass, etched glass, mosaic, floral design, fiber arts, sculpture, pencil sketches and watercolor, which would eventually become her medium of choice.
For MaryAnn, each piece is a labor of love and becomes like a part of her family. Though people would ask her to create something for them, parting with these beloved original pieces wasn’t something she felt she could do. It was this feeling led her to discovering the process of Giclée and creating limited edition prints of her work to share with others.
“Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity and studio seal, and is strictly limited edition,” MaryAnn said. “When the edition is out, they’re gone. It’s a fantastic way to make Fine Art affordable for everyone.”
MaryAnn’s most recent work has focused on the remarkable Brown Pelicans that are so familiar to coastal residents.
“I paint from photographs, and luckily for me, my sister in Florida is passionate about photography,” she said. “She’d been taking a lot of pelican pictures because they’re just so fun to watch. Seeing her photos brought back a lot of fun memories from my childhood, watching the pelicans in Galveston. I thought a lot of people would feel the same.”
As she began to research the birds, she learned that they had nearly become extinct and were now in the process of recovering thanks to the work of organizations such as the Houston Audubon Society.
Among the limited editions currently available at Selva Studios is the Brown Pelican series. A portion of the sales from these prints is donated to the Houston Audubon Society to help protect this amazing species.
While much of MaryAnn’s work is focused on coastal themes, including the Brown Pelican series and the Fun in the Sun seashell-themed series, she often gets inspired by other scenery.
The Legend of the Koi Series focuses on the beauty of the legendary fish and the Japanese folklore surrounding them and the Rainbow River. Giclée prints from this series are also available at Selva Studios.

“I’m allergic to the preservatives in most soap,” she said. “So, necessity being the mother of all invention, I started making my own. I had so many people become interested in it that I started selling it. You can get a bottle for $10, and $8 for refills.”
